This year marks Pick Everard’s ninth year attending the Healthcare Estates’ conference in Manchester Central on October 8th-9th. The event invites over 10,000 healthcare estates, engineers and facilities management professionals to network with people from across the industry.

This year’s theme is technology and it is fantastic to see so many new innovations coming through the healthcare sector, such as using artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose and treat patients. It is great to learn about the innovations already taking place and hear that the NHS is now setting up a national AI laboratory to enhance care of patients.

There have already been clinical trials which have proved AI is as good as doctors at spotting lung cancer, skin cancer and eye conditions from scans. This has the potential to allow medical professionals to prioritise the most urgent cases. This is a fantastic example of how AI can transform how hospitals operate, making everyday activities more streamlined and cost effective, ultimately improving the patient experience.

Healthcare requirements and models of care are constantly evolving, meaning the buildings used to provide medical treatment and services need to be flexible and adaptable, allowing them to respond to this ever-changing environment.

Under Scape Group’s National Built Environment Consultancy Services framework, Perfect Circle (Pick Everard, Gleeds and AECOM) has worked with a number of NHS trusts, allowing us to draw on our experience and lessons learnt from a portfolio of flexible and innovative developments.

From the outset we adopt an approach of collaboration working with all relevant clinical stakeholders, consultants and contractors. Most recently, we have delivered the refurbished accident and emergency department at Homerton Hospital which now boasts a modern, fit-for-purpose design. By engaging with end users, staff and corporate steering groups, our team created a revised structure for the A&E department designed to work for everyone.

We hope you are able to join us at Healthcare Estates’ conference in Manchester; our specialist healthcare team will be at stand B36.
